THE CHARGE OF THE KITCHEN MUMs
All in the valley of Meals
Rode the lonely chefs.
“Forward, the Kitchen MUMs!
Charge for the stove!” they said.
Into the valley of Meals
Rode the Kitchen MUMs.
II
“Forward, the Kitchen MUMs!”
Was there any wo(man) dismayed?
Not though the family she knew
Someone had blundered.
Hers not to make reply,
Hers not to reason why,
Hers but to do and die.
Into the valley of Meals
Rode the Kitchen MUMs.
III
Wok to right of her,
Cleaver to left of her,
Gas stove in front of her
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with meat and greens,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of stir fries and curries,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the Kitchen MUMs.
IV
When can their glory
fade?
O the wild charges they made!
All
the world wondered.
Honour the charges they made!
Honour the Lonely Chefs,
Noble
Kitchen MUMs!
This “revised” poem is in dedication to ALL the “lonely chefs” and “kitchen MUMS who have cooked countless meals
during the Movement Control Order/Lockdown/Restricted Movement brought about by the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.
Pardon me for revising the original poem to this tongue-in cheek style. "The Charge of the Light Brigade" is an 1854 poem by Alfred,
Lord Tennyson detailing the heroic bravery of the British soldiers as they fought the Russians at the Battle of Balaclava
during the Crimean War.
